Exostoses; Hard Bony Lumps in your mouth

Exostoses

Exostoses

The bony lumps in the gums above and below the teeth are the exostoses.  It is theorized that these form in response to a long standing bruxing (grinding and clenching) habit as a way to fortify the bone that supports the teeth.  When a dentist sees these, he knows he is in for a difficult job if he has to extract these teeth.  After the teeth are removed, these bony bumps remain and present a problem for denture wearers.
